なんと角川書店から「ダーク・タワー」が！？

風間賢二氏( @k_kazama )のツイートによると、翻訳未刊行の第4.5巻「The Wind Through The Keyhole」を含む「ダーク・タワー」シリーズ全8巻が角川文庫からリリースされる模様。

<ダーク・タワー>(全7巻　新潮文庫)は、角川文庫より全8巻(訳しおろし4.5巻を含む)として再始動します。10年前の新潮文庫とはいろいろな面で一味も二味もことなる本づくりになりますので、よろしくお願いいたします。

とのこと。

「ダーク・タワー」シリーズは長大な作品なので、何かしら機会がないと再読することがない。

これは再読する良い機会。
ついでに、「The Wind Through The Keyhole」も翻訳が出るとのことだし。

しかし、風間氏の別のツイートによると、「The Wind Through The Keyhole」の翻訳作業はいま始まったばかり。

角川文庫版の「ダーク・タワー」シリーズはいつ頃でるのだろうか。

FOREWORD

Most of the people holding this book have followed the adventures of Roland and his band—his ka-tet—for years, some of them from the very beginning. Others—and I hope there are many, newcomers and Constant Readers alike—may ask, Can I read and enjoy this story if I haven’t read the other Dark Tower books? My answer is yes, if you keep a few things in mind.

First, Mid-World lies next to our world, and there are many overlaps. In some places there are doorways between the two worlds, and sometimes there are thin places, porous places, where the two worlds actually mingle. Three of Roland’s ka-tet—Eddie, Susannah, and Jake have been drawn separately from troubled lives in New York into Roland’s Mid-World quest. Their fourth traveling companion, a billy-bumbler named Oy, is a golden-eyed creature native to Mid-World. Mid-World is very old, and falling to ruin, filled with monsters and untrustworthy magic.

Second, Roland Deschain of Gilead is a gunslinger—one of a small band that tries to keep order in an increasingly lawless world. If you think of the gunslingers of Gilead as a strange combination of knights errant and territorial marshals in the Old West, you’ll be close to the mark. Most of them, although not all, are descended from the line of the old White King, known as Arthur Eld (I told you there were overlaps).

Third, Roland has lived his life under a terrible curse. He killed his mother, who was having an affair—mostly against her will, and certainly against her better judgment—with a fellow you will meet in these pages. Although it was by mistake, he holds himself accountable, and the unhappy Gabrielle Deschain’s death has haunted him since his young manhood. These events are fully narrated in the Dark Tower cycle, but for our purposes here, I think it’s all you have to know.

For longtime readers, this book should be shelved between Wizard and Glass and Wolves of the Calla . . . which makes it, I suppose, Dark Tower 4.5.

As for me, I was delighted to discover my old friends had a little more to say. It was a great gift to find them again, years after I thought their stories were told.

初めて「The Wind Through the Keyhole」を読むんだけど、この「The Wind Through the Keyhole」だけを読んでも楽しめるのかな？

次のことがらをあたまの片隅に突っ込んでおけば、その答えは「Yes」だよ。

1.「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの舞台である中間世界は、わたし達の世界の隣にあって、ところどころで重複していて、ところどころで行き来ができる。

主人公のローランドには、カ・テットと呼ばれる仲間がいて、それは、エディ、スザンナ、ジェイクの3人で、その3人はわたし達の世界から中間世界に引きずり込まれました。

そして、4人目の旅の仲間は金色の目を持つ、ビリー・バンブラーと呼ばれる中間世界の生物オイです。

2.主人公のローランド・デスチェインは、ギリアド出身の拳銃使い(ガンスリンガー)で、わたし達の世界の昔の西部のような無法地帯で正義を貫く存在で、白の王アーサー・エルドの血を受け継いでいます。

3.ローランドの運命は恐ろしい呪いに彩られています。彼は自分の母親を不義を働いたものとして殺してしまい、そのことについてずっと悩んでいます。
覚えておくことはこれだけで十分です。

ところで、「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの昔からの読者に対しては、本作「The Wind Through the Keyhole」は、「ダーク・タワーIV 魔道師と水晶球」と「ダーク・タワーV カーラの狼」の間にあたり、言うならば「ダーク・タワー4.5」みたいなものだと言えるでしょう。

また、わたしにとって本作「The Wind Through the Keyhole」は、かつての仲間たちが言い残したことを再発見できる喜ばしい機会となりました。
そして、本作でわたしが彼らと再会することは、彼らの物語を全て語り終えたと思っていたわたし自身への素晴らしいプレゼントなりました。

まあ、こんなところでいかがでしょう。

2011年12月22日　スティーヴン・キングのオフィシャル・サイトで「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」の普及版ハードカバーのアートワークが公開された。

以前のエントリー『「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」の表紙公開か！？』で紹介した「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」のアートワークは、ドナルド・M・グラント社から出版される予定の限定版のアートワークで、イラストレイターJae Leeの手によるものである。

Jae Leeはご承知のように、スティーヴン・キング原作の「ダーク・タワー」シリーズのグラフィック・ノベルのアートワークを担当するイラストレイターであり、「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」限定版のイラストのテイストは、やはりグラフィック・ノベル(コミックブック)のような印象を受ける。

しかしながら、今回公開された「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」普及版ハードカバーのアートワークは、限定版のそれとは全く異なる印象を受ける。

それでは、そのアートワークをみてみよう。

これはきれい。素晴らしい。
私見だが、限定版より普及版の方が良いですね。

なんと、ほぼ互角の戦いなのだ。

因みに、ここで言う"Mid-World Book"というのが、「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの新刊で、"Doctor Sleep"と言うのが、「シャイニング」の続編のこと。

わたしが何故「シャイニング」に決まってるだろう、と思ったのは、次の観点から。

観点１
「シャイニング」の方が「ダーク・タワー」シリーズより短く、古く、そして有名。
つまり、「シャイニング」の方が「ダーク・タワー」シリーズより読まれている。

観点２
「Doctoe Sleep」は「シャイニング」の続編だけど、「Mid-World Book／The Wind Through The Keyhole」は、「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの続編ではなく、スピンアウト小説と言うか、外伝と言うか、シリーズの隙間をうめる作品だと言われている。

しかしながら、ほぼ互角とは、はっきり言ってとっても驚いています。

なんだか知らないけど、「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの新作が執筆されるかも、だったりする。
気になるワーキング・タイトルは「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」とのこと。

キングはもしかしたら、最短で8ケ月後位から執筆を開始するかも知れない、らしい。

本作が、「ダーク・タワー」シリーズの第8巻目にあたるのか、はたまた外伝的な物語になるのか不明。

因みにこのお話は、2009/11/11、スティーヴン・キングのオフィシャル・サイトでアナウンスされました。

余談だけど、このワーキング・タイトル「THE WIND THROUGH THE KEYHOLE」は「ゆりかごを揺らす手」みたいで格好良いぞ。
